How to Clean a Plushie Without Ruining It (Step-by-Step Guide)
First, check the care label
Every plushie should come with a care tag sewn into a seam. It'll tell you one of four things:
- Machine wash — cold, gentle cycle
- Hand wash only — cool water, mild detergent
- Spot clean only — usually for plushies with delicate embroidery, electronics, or glued-on parts
- Dry clean only — rare but real (some vintage or electronic plushies)
If the label is gone, default to hand wash. It's almost always safe.
Method 1: Machine washing a plushie
What you need
- A mesh laundry bag or pillowcase
- Mild detergent (baby detergent works great)
- Your washing machine set to cold / gentle / delicates
Steps
- Place the plushie inside the mesh bag or pillowcase. This stops the fur from matting and protects any embroidered features.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent — half what you'd use for a load of laundry.
- Wash on cold water, gentle/delicate cycle. Never use hot water — it can damage polyester fibres and warp the shape.
- Skip the spin cycle if you can. Excessive spinning compresses the stuffing.
Method 2: Hand washing a plushie
Steps
- Fill a basin or sink with cool water and a tiny amount of mild detergent.
- Submerge the plushie and gently squeeze the soapy water through it. Do not wring or twist.
- Drain the soapy water, refill with clean cool water, and rinse until no soap remains.
- Press out excess water by rolling the plushie in a clean towel.
Method 3: Spot cleaning
For plushies that can't be fully washed (or for small stains on any plushie):
- Dab a clean cloth in mild soapy water.
- Gently blot — don't scrub — the stained area.
- Use a second cloth with clean water to rinse the soap out.
- Pat dry and air-dry completely before cuddling again.
How to dry a plushie properly
This is where most people ruin their plushie. Never tumble-dry on high heat. Instead:
- Air dry on a clean towel out of direct sunlight. Rotate every few hours so every side dries evenly.
- Low-heat tumble dry with dryer balls (tennis balls work) to fluff the stuffing — only if the care label allows it.
- Brush the fur gently with a soft-bristle brush once dry to restore the fluffy texture.
A full dry can take 24-48 hours for a giant plushie. Don't rush it — damp stuffing grows mould. If you own oversized plushies, our guide to giant plushies for adults covers care tips specific to larger sizes.
How often should you clean your plushie?
- Daily-use cuddle plushie: every 1-2 months
- Bed pillow plushie: every 2-3 months
- Desk or display plushie: once or twice a year, or when visibly dusty
- Kid's plushie: monthly, or sooner if it's been dropped somewhere questionable
Regular cleaning is especially important if you use your plushie as a sleep and bedtime comfort companion — oils and sweat build up faster than you think.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Washing in hot water — warps the shape
- Using bleach — destroys colours and fabric
- Wringing by hand — rips seams
- Drying in direct sun — fades colours
- Storing damp — grows mildew
